Oman-based Nama Power and Water Procurement Company (Nama PWP) has announced that utility project developers including Saudi-based Acwa Power, Japan’s Sumitomo and Itochu, Framce’s TotalEnergies and EDF, as well as UAE-based Masdar, have emerged as top qualifiers for the development of five large-scale wind energy projects.

The exclusive procurer of power and water in Oman, Nama PWP, said these projects, located across key governorates represent a significant milestone in the sultanate’s journey towards achieving its renewable energy goals and transitioning to a low-carbon future.

The wind Independent Power Projects (IPPs) will contribute to the sultanate’s broader strategy to generate 30% of its energy needs from renewable sources by 2030, thereby reducing dependence on conventional fossil fuels and enhancing energy security.

Nama PWP has been actively working to diversify the Sultanate of Oman’s energy mix by facilitating competitive tenders for renewable energy projects, including solar and wind initiatives.

These five large-scale wind energy projects are:

  • Jalan Bani bu Ali Wind IPP: located in the South Sharqiyah Governate, with 91-105MW capacity, the facility is due for commercial operation in Q1 2027
  • Duqm Wind IPP: located at Ras Madrakah in Duqm, with 234-270 MW capacity, the facility is due for commercial operation in Q4 2027
  • Mahoot Wind I IPP: the project, which has a capacity of 342-400MW, will be developed in Al Wusta Governate and is due for commercial operation in Q4 2027
  • Dhofar Wind II IPP: this will be adjacent to the existing Dhofar Wind I IPP in Shaleem and Al Hallaniyat Islands in Dhofar Governate and will have a capacity of 114-132 MW. It is due to be operational in Q2 2027
  • Sadah Wind IPP: the facility, with a capacity of 81-99MW, will be developed at a site located in Dhofar Governate. It is due for commercial operations in Q4 2027

Nama said it was overwhelmed by the strong response for the five wind energy projects with a total of 16 statements of qualification (SOQs) submitted for the Jaalan Bani Bu Ali Wind IPP; 15 for the Dhofar II Wind IPP; 15 for the Duqm and Sadah Wind IPPs as well as 15 for the Mahoot I Wind IPP.

Following a comprehensive and rigorous evaluation process, 11 applicants were qualified for Jaalan Bani Bu Ali Wind IPP, while 12 each were qualified for the Dhofar II Wind IPP and Mahoot I Wind IPP as well as the Duqm and Sadah Wind IPPs.

The qualified applicants are Acwa Power; Sembcorp; Sumitomo; Itochu; TotalEnergies; Masdar; Al Fanar; EDF Renouvelables; Elecnor; Goldwind; GED and Marafiq; Hero Asia Investment.

According to Nama, these projects mark a major step in the Sultanate’s efforts to meet its net-zero carbon emissions target by 2050. Once operational, they will collectively reduce Oman’s carbon emissions by more than 978,000 tonnes per year and contribute significantly to the overall renewable energy output.

Red-Sea-1.jpg

Red Sea Global (RSG) has announced that it has been awarded seven new LEED certifications for properties at The Red Sea. These Building Design + Construction (BD+C) certifications position them for developing efficient, green buildings. Additionally, RSG also secured LEED for Cities and Communities pre-certification for the AMAALA masterplan.

“We were determined to redefine industry standards from the outset. To ensure we deliver on this ambition, our development and delivery teams work hand-in-hand with our sustainability team at every stage, scrutinising design plans and collaborating during the build process, resulting in high quality, low-impact properties,” said John Pagano, Group CEO at Red Sea Global.

To achieve LEED certification, each building incorporates a range of sustainability features including passive design techniques, energy-efficient technologies, sustainable material selection, water conservation strategies, building management systems, and treated sewage effluent for irrigation.

Peter Templeton, CEO at the US Green Building Council (USGBC) added, “Achieving LEED certification is more than just implementing sustainable practices. It represents a commitment to making the world a better place and influencing others to do better. Given the extraordinary importance of climate protection and the central role buildings play in that effort, Red Sea Global is creating a path forward through their LEED certification.”

All six properties newly certified at The Red Sea are connected to the destination’s renewable infrastructure and operate entirely on solar energy. Across Phase One of the development alone, this will avoid the equivalent of 575,000t of carbon dioxide being emitted into the atmosphere per year. This is equal to removing more than 133,000 cars from the road for one year or powering 75,000 homes. Further, Red Sea International Airport (RSI) is the only airport across the Gulf Cooperation Council countries powered by sunlight 24 hours a day, said RSG in its statement.

LEED v4.1 Building Design + Construction is a benchmark in energy and environmental design. Achieving the certification is the foundation for LEED Zero, a complement to LEED that verifies the achievement of net zero goals in buildings during operation and maintenance, said the statement.

When it opened last year, Six Senses Southern Dunes, The Red Sea, became the first hotel in Saudi Arabia to achieve LEED Platinum status. In July 2024, the USGBC included Red Sea Global in its 2024 LEED Power Builders, a recognition awarded to developers and builders that have exhibited an outstanding commitment to LEED and residential green building. RSG is the only developer outside the US to have made that list.

RSG welcomed its first guests last year, with three of its hotels now open. Shebara and Desert Rock will welcome their first guests later this year, while Shura Island is on track to welcome guests in 2025, the statement highlighted.
