Saudi Arabia plans to build three projects in the iron and steel sectors with a combined production capacity of 6.2m tonnes, according to a top government official. The total value of the projects is estimated to be US $9.31bn.

According to a Saudi Press Agency report which quoted Bandar Al Khorayef, Saudi Minister of Industry and Mineral Resources, one of the projects is an integrated iron sheet production complex with a capacity of 1.2m tonnes a year. Once complete, it will support the shipbuilding, oil platform and oil reservoirs manufacturing sectors.

In March 2022, Doosan Heavy Industries and Construction broke ground on a 400,000sqm forging and casting facility in Saudi Arabia.

He added that the ministry is working with local and international investors to establish a variety of investment opportunities in these sectors in the Kingdom.

Making the announcement during a speech at the Saudi International Iron and Steel Conference, Al Khorayef said that another project is being negotiated with international investors. He said that it entails the building of an integrated iron surface production complex with an annual capacity of four million tonnes of hot rolled iron, and one million tonnes of cold rolled iron, as well as 200,000t of tin-plated iron and other products. The complex will serve the automotive, food packaging, household appliances, and water transportation pipe sectors, Al Khorayef stated.

In August, Johnson Arabia completed works on a calcined petroleum coke plant in Oman.

Finally, a factory will be established to produce circular iron blocks with an estimated production capacity of one million tonnes per year. It will be the main introduction to the oil and gas industry’s unwelded iron pipes, the report concluded.

In September, JO Steel Holdings said that it had secured $692mn credit to set up a steel plant in Saudi Arabia.

Bank Nizwa has signed a US $650mn agreement with Palm Beach for the Al Nakheel Project, an integrated tourism complex that will be developed by Alargan Towell Investment Company in Oman.

The Al Nakheel project is being built under the auspices of the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism and is a mixed-use real estate development located on the seafront between Al Seeb and Barka. It is said to be in close proximity to the Daymaniyat Islands Nature Reserve.

The project will be constructed on a land area of 500,000sqm and will have a total built up area of 369,000sqm. It will be developed in three phases, with Bank Nizwa’s financing being extended for the development of Phase 1A of the project, the development of which will commence in 2022, the statement explained.

In August 2022, Oman’s Rakiza fund said it received a capital commitment of US $298mn from Saudi Arabia’s PIF.

Khaled Al Kayed, CEO of Bank Nizwa, said: “The real estate sector is a critical component of the national economy, and the upcoming Al Nakheel Project, which is set to be an iconic destination, will certainly attract significant investments. We are indeed delighted to join hands with a reputable company as Palm Beach and be a part of this prestigious development.”

“While this project will significantly boost the real estate sector in the country, it also reaffirms our commitment to support national initiatives that offer sustainable, long-term benefits while strengthening Oman’s position as a lucrative investment destination,” he remarked.

The development will be centred around a Crystal Lagoon of 51,000sqm, which will be the first in Oman and will act as a major anchor for the development, thus differentiating Al Nakheel from other ITC developments, the statement pointed out.

In early August, Johnson Arabia said it had completed the installation and erection work for a date processing complex in Oman.

Once completed, the project is expected to include three hotels, villas, apartments, serviced apartments, mixed-use souks, an aqua park, a mall, and a school, all of which are carefully spread over different phases.

Al Kayed added: “Targeting the middle-income strata of the local and expatriate population, the Al Nakheel Project has various offerings for the residential, tourism, and retail markets. Positioned as an attractive and affordable tourism destination, it also closely resonates with the bank’s values of promoting inclusivity while ensuring that an exciting lifestyle experience is more accessible to all.”

Later in August, Omani authorities said that the $175mn Botanic Garden was on track for completion in 2023.

Hyundai Construction Equipment has unveiled the HW150A CR compact wheeled excavator, it is expected to become the flagship model in its growing A-series range. It follows the launch of the larger HW170A CR and has been introduced to meet demand for a more utility and service oriented wheeled machine in the 15-17t segment, the company says.

The HW150A CR has been designed with reduced tailswing for working in confined spaces and busy environments. The machine’s load sensing hydraulic system is said to allow for multi-functional operation and precise machine movements, and it also comes with proportional auxiliary hydraulics, enabling precise control of attachments, fine swing control for increased precision with less material spill, and a power boost function for instant power up when needed.

In June 2022, Hyundai expanded its heavy construction range with two articulated dump trucks.

The HW150A CR uses the same Cummins B4.5 diesel engine as the HW140A, HW160A and the HW170A CR, with an output of 129kW (173hp) at 2,200rpm. According to the manufacturer, it features an EGR-free design for increased fuel economy and longer maintenance intervals, contributing to reduced cost of operation. In Q1 2020, Cummins became the sole engine supplier for Hyundai CE’s heavy range.

“The all new HW150A CR is born from the requirements of urban job sites. Its rear short radius allows for top maneuverability as well as for operator convenience and safety. We made the choice of using components and systems from reputable suppliers, which already pays off in terms of performance and durability. The powerful engine, in combination with load sensing hydraulics, gives the machine smooth controllability, along with high performance, as well as an enhanced versatility. A wheeled excavator just the way you want it. No frills, easy to handle and thoroughly robust,” explained Peter Sebold, Product Manager at Hyundai Construction Equipment Europe.

Grove-heavy-duty-jib_1000x600-1.jpg

September 13, 2022 foasummit0

Grove has introduced a new heavy-duty jib extension for its GRT9165 rough-terrain crane, which is designed to increase the 150t crane’s utilisation abilities. The optional jib improves efficiency when setting precast concrete panels due to its easy transportation and fast set-up time, the company says.

The jib is 12.5ft (3.8 m) long and designed with two sheaves, for up to four parts of line, and is hydraulically offsettable from 0° to 50°. The compact but stout jib has a max lifting capacity of 68,600 lbs, the firm notes.

In September 2021, Manitowoc said it updated its Grove TMS9000-2 truck crane with more power and faster setup.

According to the manufacturer, the new jib has up to 20% greater capacities on average than  other cranes for tilt-up work, while the two-hook design gives operators tight precision when positioning panels, with the hydraulic jib controlled via an in-cab switch for faster operation and convenience.

The heavy-duty jib was designed to meet the fast-changing precast concrete panel market, one of the most common off-site techniques used during construction. US-based design-build contractor Miron Construction Co. (Miron) recently became the first customer to use the new jib which is available to order for all new Grove GRT9165 rough-terrain cranes and as a retrofit for cranes in the field.

In May 2022, Taiwanese crane rental company Huixiang Crane Lifting said it had purchased its first Grove crane.

“It takes a larger crane to lift and rotate the concrete panels and vertically set them in place. Our precast jobs have a short duration and we wanted to minimise transport and setup costs,” said Pete Klosterman, Executive Vice President, Field Resources for Miron.

He added, “The GRT9165 with the heavy-duty jib is the perfect package for what we need. It has strong capacities and precision for precast and is a solid all-around crane for the wider range of work we do.”

In early September 2022, Tadano said it delivered four rough-terrain cranes to Descon Engineering’s Dubai branch.

Dubai-Municipality-Waste-to-Energy1_1000x600-1.jpg

September 13, 2022 foasummit0

Dubai Municipality has announced that 85% of construction work on what’s billed as the world’s largest waste-to-energy project has been completed. The municipal body said that the Dubai Waste Management Centre (DWMC), which began construction in 2021, will push the emirate as a global model for sustainable development.

The project will contribute to Dubai Municipality’s strategic objective of reducing and completely diverting waste from landfills by 2030. Located in Dubai’s Al Warsan area, the first-of-its-kind project will convert 45% of the emirate’s municipal waste into renewable energy once complete, it said.

Construction of the waste management centre is on schedule, with the first phase set to be ready by 2023. The entire project is scheduled to finish by 2024.

In July 2022, SirajPower inked a deal to develop a solar-diesel-battery project for the Cleanco Waste Treatment project.

Dawoud Al Hajri, Director General of Dubai Municipality, said that the DWMC provides an innovative solution to transforming huge quantities of waste into a sustainable source of clean energy. He pointed out that the centre reflects Dubai’s efforts to protect the environment by implementing state-of-the-art technologies. He also noted that DWMC will boost the emirate’s sustainability credentials, in line with national energy objectives and the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050, which aim to make Dubai a global centre of clean energy and green economy.

“Dubai has always sought to be a pioneer in the field of waste-to-energy. By reducing the amount of solid waste and providing alternative sources for generating clean energy, the project will contribute to achieving a sustainable and eco-friendly model of waste management. With the world’s largest operational capacity, DWMC will process 1.9m tonnes of waste annually and convert it into renewable energy, generating enough energy to power 135,000 homes,” Al Hajri said.

Dubai’s population is expected to continue growing at an increasingly rapid pace thanks to a surge in economic activities. As such, the project would significantly minimise the potential volume of municipal waste in landfills and create alternative energy sources, he explained.

Late in July, EWEC and Tadweer issued a RFP for an Abu Dhabi Waste-to-Energy IPP.

Once fully operational, the plant’s renewable energy, generated from treating waste, will feed the local electricity grid with 215MWh of clean energy. Through two of its five treatment lines, the centre will commence its initial operations at 40% by early 2023. It will process 2,000 tonnes of solid waste to produce 80MWh of renewable energy at this stage.

Covering an area of 400,000sqm, the facility’s generator and steam turbine, a key technology in producing electricity, have already been installed. The centre will rely on state-of-the-art Japanese and Swiss technologies for the treatment process that will ensure any emissions are environmentally friendly and odour-free. Once operational, the centre will receive around 1,000 truckloads of waste daily, with a capacity to accommodate 88 trucks per hour. Through five treatment lines, the DWMC will have the capacity to process 5,666 tonnes of solid municipal waste per day. Burnt waste will produce around 1,000t of bottom ash, which will be recycled and used in infrastructure projects.

Dubai Municipality said it has also launched an e-platform to exchange recyclable and reusable materials for reducing the quantities of waste produced and raising the percentage of waste diverted from landfills.

In August, CDE said it had surpassed 100m tonnes of diverted waste from landfill.

Digital-Construction-Summit_1000x600-2.jpg

September 13, 2022 foasummit0

Big Project Middle East’s forthcoming Digital Construction Summit (DCS) has been officially endorsed by The Private Office of His Highness Sheikh Saeed Bin Ahmed Al Maktoum.

The live event is scheduled to take place on 14 September at the Anantara Downtown hotel (formerly known as the Oberoi Dubai) in Business Bay, Dubai. Registration is mandatory but complementary for regional construction professionals.

Hisham Al Gurg, CEO, Seed Group and the Private Office of Sheikh Saeed bin Ahmed Al Maktoum, said, “Digitalisation is inevitable. It is an integral part of everything from daily life chores to nation-building strategies. Sectors like construction and real estate are few of the early adopters of digitalisation and big contributors to the success and growth of the digital economy. Events like Digital Construction Summit are a good way of celebrating the strides the industry has been making and continues to make towards a more digitally empowered future.”

The Digital Construction Summit has also been endorsed by Dubai Municipality and buildingSMART UAE.

Digital transformation in the construction sector can yield a number of benefits including increased productivity, increased safety and risk mitigation, higher quality buildings and developments, and improved collaboration. It can also be the game changer the built environment needs to reduce its substantial impact on the environment and become more sustainable.

According to research by the McKinsey Global Institute, digital transformation can result in productivity gains of 14% to 15% and cost reductions of four to six percent, when technology and operational changes are fully embraced by engineering and construction (E&C) companies.

The challenge for E&C companies going forward is to embrace digital transformation properly. In a report issued in 2019, McKinsey noted that outside of “individual major projects, few construction companies have fully digitsed their operations”. It also said that the built environment isn’t the only sector struggling however, pointing out that many companies across sectors have reported “digital transformation falling short of their expectations”. As per a McKinsey survey, just 16% of respondents said that their organisations’ digital transformations had delivered sustainable performance improvements.

The Digital Construction Summit will aim to shine a light on the challenges, as well as tools and strategies that E&C companies can embrace to get the most out of digital transformation and digitalisation. The summit, which opens for registration from 8am and concludes at 5pm, will feature a number of panel discussions and presentations including: Embracing Change: Why the built environment must increase digitalisation; 4D modeling and innovation in project management; What digitalisation means for asset management; Solving the challenges facing the water industry through the digital twin; Entering the Metaverse: What does it mean for the construction sector and more. Details about the event’s full agenda, as well as its speakers can be seen here.

Dubai Municipality will also be hosting an exclusive workshop focused on 3D concrete printing at the DCS. The workshop will feature a keynote titled: The Strategic Implementation of 3D Concrete Printing, which will be presented by Aisha AlMulla, Head of Research & Building Section at Dubai Municipality.

The session will also feature a case study from Kareem Farah, ECC Director, who will showcase how the firm delivered the largest 3D printed project in the world in partnership with Dubai Municipality. A panel discussion on 3D concrete printing will round up the workshop; it will be led by Prakash Senghani, CEO of Navatech Group and will discuss the challenges and opportunities that come with embracing the technology, and the potential it has for transforming the way buildings and structures are built and designed in the future.

The Big Project Middle East led Digital Construction Summit is supported by: Gold Sponsor: ASGC; Silver Sponsors: ASITE, The SNC-Lavalin Group, Topcon; Bronze Sponsors: AECOM, AESG, CUPIX, JT+Partners, Kairnial, KEO, ZOHO; Technical Partner: Bentley, ECC, OpenSpace; Exhibitor: Plan Radar; Knowledge Partner: BSI.
