Khazna Data Centres and BEEAH Digital have formed a joint venture (JV) company to advance digital infrastructure in Sharjah, starting with the city’s first Tier 3 data centre. The newly established JV will be called One Data Centre SPV Limited and operate under the name of Khazna Data Centres.

According to a WAM report, the data centre will be equipped with high-tech security, fire and environmental control systems, as well as full redundancy grade power.

In a signing ceremony at the BEEAH Group Headquarters, Hassan Alnaqbi, CEO of Khazna Data Centres, and Khaled Al Huraimel, Vice Chairman and Group CEO of BEEAH Group, officially formed the JV.

In February 2022, Robin Keuning, Lead Project Manager at Turner & Townsend told Middle East Construction News (MECN) there’s no substitute for engaging a project manager who already has first-hand experience to lead a quality-driven data centre development to successful completion.

As the venture’s inaugural project, the Tier 3 data centre will support the Sharjah Government’s ambitious digital transformation efforts. It will also enable organisations across the UAE to pursue digitally led operations that deliver scalable high-performance services, create new jobs and commercial opportunities, and foster customer satisfaction.

Alnaqbi said: “Data centres are cornerstones in enabling innovation and driving growth for businesses across various sectors. They are also creating digital opportunities and seamless connections as businesses continue to develop and scale their operations. At Khazna Data Centres, we are focused on further investments in building the infrastructure in the UAE to enable our existing and new customers in Sharjah, specifically to launch their services closer to their consumers.”

The data centre will be well positioned to support businesses in enhancing their customers’ experiences, unlocking the value of technologies, and making headway on their carbon footprint reduction goals by meeting their environmental and sustainability needs, he added.

In March, EDGNEX said it broke ground on a new 20MW data centre in Riyadh.

Once operational, the centre will have a capacity of 9MW. It will have multiple power and cooling pathways, maximising uptime while minimising the cost of maintenance and power. Technologies to reduce cooling requirements will be integrated into the data centre. With solar power, the project will minimise emissions relating to power consumption. Inside, smart LED lighting with motion sensors will also help conserve energy. With a Power Usage Efficiency of 1.5 and below, the data centre will be more energy-efficient than the industry average, the statement said.

It will also be designed to reduce water consumption with systems to reuse and recycle wastewater. It is aligned with Khazna’s ‘Future First Strategy’, which aims to achieve carbon-neutrality operations across all its sites by 2050. The data centre is also aligned with BEEAH Digital’s purpose, which is to accelerate sustainable impact for societies using robust digital solutions.

Ultimately, the data centre will adopt Net Zero waste standards and certifications, benchmarked against the UAE’s sustainability agenda and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Khazna and BEEAH Digital are committed to exploring renewable energy sources to meet the data centre’s power requirements. The facility will also be constructed to achieve green building certifications from Estidama and LEED.

In April, ALEC launched a new data centre construction company with Prefabricated and Liquid Immersion Solutions.

Al Huraimel noted, “With a Tier 3 data centre, we can enhance the available infrastructure for government entities and private companies. The advanced IT infrastructure will help boost investments, attract business and bring world-class services and data sovereignty for the wider public.”

Earlier, the BEEAH Group launched the region’s first commercial-scale, waste-to-energy plant in Sharjah with a 30MW output. A portion of the output from this waste-to-energy plant is being explored as a potential energy source.

The National Air Quality Agenda 2031 has been launched by the UAE’s Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MOCCAE). The launch took place during a forum that the MOCCAE organised to mark the International Day of Clean Air for Blue Skies under the theme ‘The Air We Share’. The day is said to have featured multiple presentations of the outcomes of local scientific research about particulate matter composition and sources.

According to the MOCCAE, the agenda was approved by the UAE Cabinet in June 2022 and provides a general framework to lead and align federal/local government entities and the private sector, with regards to monitoring and effectively managing air quality. It also outlines the reduction of air pollution to contribute to a healthier and safer environment.

“Air pollution is one of the main issues affecting the wellbeing of mankind and the environment. Estimated to cause seven million premature deaths annually, it contributes to impeding global efforts to combat climate change,” said Her Excellency Mariam bint Mohammed Almheiri, Minister of Climate Change and Environment.

Late in August 2022, the MOCCAE unveiled a pledge designed to boost the private sector’s contribution to the UAE’s Net Zero by 2050 initiative.

She added, “To mark the International Day of Clean Air for Blue Skies, we hosted a forum that brought together local and international stakeholders to highlight the interconnection between air pollution and public health, promote collective action to tackle the issue, and spur discussions to develop practical solutions. The development of the agenda was made possible through the valuable contributions of various federal and local government stakeholders. The active participation of our institutional partners proves the paramount importance of this endeavor.”

As per the MOCCAE, the agenda sets out trends, initiatives, and projects that will be launched in the coming few years to address air pollution in four focus areas:

  • Outdoor air quality that includes eight supporting goals across 29 action themes, mainly in the transport, energy and electricity generation, construction, and waste sectors;
  • Indoor air quality that covers three supporting goals and six action themes with a focus on construction materials, substances used in household products, and building maintenance;
  • Ambient odor that comprises four supporting goals and 10 action themes in waste management, wastewater treatment, and industry;
  • Ambient noise that has five supporting goals and 16 action themes in transport, construction, and industry

To achieve its targets, the National Air Quality Agenda outlines key enablers including establishing a clear and robust policy and institutional framework, enhancing technical and human resource capacities, promoting scientific and academic research, leveraging advanced technology, and facilitating access to financial resources, the MOCCAE explained.

In early September, a youth movement called for global leaders to take “urgent and bold climate adaption action”.

The agenda is built on three pillars, the MOCCAE says. Monitoring refers to the actual measurement of air pollution and related parameters, while mitigation involves a broad range of existing, planned, and required actions that will be taken to reduce levels of and exposure to pollutants. Finally, management relates to measures that will allow for interventions and initiatives to be effectively implemented, tracked, and controlled to reach the overall goal of improved air quality.

The MOCCAE event drew the participation of international organisations including the United Nations, the Global Green Growth Institute, and the Climate and Clean Air Coalition. Among the federal and local government entities in attendance were the Ministry of Health and Prevention, the Federal Competitiveness and Statistics Centre, the National Center of Meteorology, the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi, Dubai Municipality, Sharjah City Municipality, Abu Dhabi Public Health Center, the Dubai Health Authority, the Environment Protection and Development Authority in Ras Al Khaimah, and Umm Al Quwain Municipality.

Khalifa University, American University of Sharjah, the United Arab Emirates University, and New York University Abu Dhabi represented academia at the forum, the MOCCAE concluded.

In February 2021, Sharjah-based developer Arada signed a deal with MOCCAE to boost environmental sustainability.

ACT Arabian Consolidated Trading Est has become the first company in Saudi Arabia to take delivery of a Liebherr LTM 1650-8.1 mobile crane, the crane manufacturer has announced.

ACT, which previously used its predecessor model, the Liebherr LTM 1500-8.1, opted for the full equipment package including both telescopic boom lengths, 54 and 80m, at the time of purchase. It continues the relationship the company has enjoyed with Liebherr since 1987, the statement said.

According to Liebherr the new LTM 1650-8.1 outperforms its predecessor by 15-to-50% in terms of load capacity – depending on the equipment.

In August 2022, Liebherr said it had successfully tested air conditioning units destined for use in Etihad Rail trains.

“The LTM 1500-8.1 is a proven crane within the ACT Group that has also impressed our customers,” says Hassan Mohammed Rashid Al-Naimi, Founder and President of ACT. “We wanted to have Saudi Arabia’s first LTM 1650-8.1. ACT has always been a pioneer and has set standards in the crane business in Saudi Arabia. And we have now done this once again with the new 700-tonne crane.”

The Saudi Arabian company followed its standard practice of buying fully equipped cranes when purchasing the LTM 1650-8.1, acquiring both telescopic boom lengths in the process. The new crane can be equipped with a 54 or 80-metre boom. To switch between them, only the corresponding telescopic sections must be changed, rather than the entire boom, Liebherr said.

The crane and heavy-duty company ACT Arabian Consolidated Trading Est was founded in Saudi Arabia in 1986 and has grown steadily ever since. In total, ACT Arabian Consolidated Trading Est operates 238 cranes, 180 of which were manufactured by Liebherr. The company’s focus is on crane rental and operations in refinery maintenance and decommissioning.

Later in August, Liebherr said it had expanded its heavy lift ship crane series, and said it would display its rail-road excavator with hydrostatic drive at Bauma 2022.
