The fifth edition of Arcadis’ Sustainable Cities Index (SCI) has revealed that Oslo has clinched the first spot in its ‘Overall’ ranking. Stockholm, Tokyo, Copenhagen and Berlin were ranked at second, third, fourth and fifth respectively.

The SCI ranks 100 global cities on three different pillars of sustainability: Planet (environmental), People (social), and Profit (economic). The report noted that Oslo ranked first in terms of Planet, 17th in People and 39th in Profit.

The top five cities in the Planet pillar were: Oslo, Paris, Stockholm, Copenhagen and Berlin. The report said these cities’ governance, innovation, human capital and climate action efforts boost their environmental scores. Tokyo is the only non-European city to feature in the top ten, while
Bogota is the only developing city to feature in the top 40.

John Batten, Global Cities Director at Arcadis noted, since our last SCI published in 2018, the pressure on cities has grown exponentially and our relationship with them has changed. Cities were on the front line of the COVID-19 pandemic, with hubs around the world suffering enormous social and financial fallout as businesses were forced to close, public services were pushed to their limits and unemployment rose. The sense of urgency around climate change has also spiked dramatically over the past several years. Glasgow, Zurich, Copenhagen, Seoul and Singapore were listed in the top five in the People pillar. The report said these high-performing cities offered healthy, safe, well-connected environments and relatively low-income inequality. Several east Asian cities – Seoul, Singapore and Tokyo – also featured in the top 10, propelled to top positions by their strong, affordable amenities, excellent education and low-income inequality, the report explained.

Seattle, Atlanta, Boston, San Francisco and Pittsburgh were named in the top five in terms of the Profit Pillar. The report remarked that US cities lead the way in areas such as connectivity, ease of doing business, green finance, economic development and job quality. However, the report also pointed out that profitability doesn’t always translate into prosperity.

Batten added, although the pandemic may have temporarily stunted growth for many cities, it has presented the opportunity for a ‘Great Reset’, towards greener, healthier, more inclusive centers. Sustainability is not a luxury; on the contrary, it’s something we cannot afford to lose focus on. For all the suffering it caused, one positive thing the pandemic taught us is that radical change is not as far out of reach as we think. ‘Building back better’ is not only about economic recovery; it is about meeting the evolving needs of citizens  in a way that accelerates our progress towards Net Zero.

Cities must take a holistic approach, developing a sustainability plan that invests equally in the three pillars of Planet, People and Profit. Often, cities have a laser focus on attracting businesses, investors, and skills to feed the profit pillar. There should be as much fanfare when it comes to creating affordable housing, building Net Zero infrastructure and transport, and reducing air pollution, he cautioned.

He concluded that cities are not only the places where most change is needed, but where the most change is possible.

On 21 June 2022, Big Project Middle East’s inaugural Energy & Sustainability Summit will shine a light on the transition to a cleaner, greener and more efficient future. The event is free to attend for construction industry professionals. Regional construction experts also debated what future cities may look like at Middle East Consultant’s 2022 Future of Architecture (FOA) Summit – watch the panel discussion here. At the FOA Summit, Ahmed Khadier, Founder, Director at Pragma also discussed the power of repurposing structures – watch that session here.

Emrill-Rope-Access-Cleaning_01_1000x600-1.jpg

June 17, 2022 foasummit0

Facilities management (FM) services provider Emrill has expanded its in-house offering via the introduction of rope access cleaning. The FM company previously launched an in-house high-level cleaning service in 2020, in response to increased demand as a result of the UAE’s high number of skyscrapers and vertical communities.

As part of this latest offering, Emrill will add Industrial Rope Access Trade Association (IRATA)-certified rope access cleaning to its existing façade cleaning services, which utilise scaffolding and building maintenance units to access buildings’ external windows and façades, a statement from the firm said.

The firm pointed out that it is already providing rope access cleaning across a number of residential communities, commercial buildings and malls in which it provides facilities management services, including Dubai Hills, Dubai Festival City, The Gardens and Arada. The FM organisation originally won the three-year Arada FM contract in February 2021.

“Following the successful launch of Emrill’s in-house high-level cleaning service, we have continued to work collaboratively with clients to identify their needs, so we can offer services that exactly match them. The high-rise buildings in the UAE are among the tallest and most unique in the world. Traditional building maintenance units and scaffolding are unable to grant access to many parts of their façades, so introducing rope access cleaning was an obvious choice as we strive to offer end-to-end facilities management services to Emrill’s clients,” said Emrill’s Operations Director, Gopalakrishnan.

Rope access cleaning is said to have become the preferred method of façade cleaning, as it provides a more efficient and cost-effective alternative to the use of cradles and lifts. To ensure the safety of its employees and building residents and visitors, Emrill’s rope access cleaners are IRATA-certified and have completed safety training for working at heights, the statement added.

Emrill is certified by IRATA and all of Emrill’s rope access cleaning standard operation procedures, processes and specialised equipment are IRATA-approved, the firm clarified.

Gopalakrishnan remarked, “Our rope access systems can be assembled quickly. We can complete façade cleaning in less time, meaning disruption is minimal, and the results are to the same world-class standard we deliver across our entire service range.”

In recent years, Emrill has launched several new services and business units to provide its customers with a single point of delivery for all service activities. This has decreased the requirement for Emrill to use subcontractors for specialised services, enabling the facilities management provider increased control over standards, cost and quality.

In September 2021, the FM company also launched Emrill Interiors, targeting the fit-out contracting sector, and, in April 2022, appointed Thomas Friswell as Associate Director of Operations.

IKEA said it will open the doors to its first flagship store at Oman Avenues Mall on June 19, 2022. The two-storey, 25,000sqm outlet will include ‘cutting-edge customer experience technology and will offer inspirational and unique home furnishing ideas.’

In light of the changing retail landscape, the Oman Avenues Mall has embarked on an all-encompassing transformational journey to stay relevant, Al Taher Group, the developers behind the mall, said. This has included macro-scale infrastructure augmentation, a statement from the group noted.

Accessible through Sultan Qaboos Street, the new development will be connected to major population centres via dedicated flyovers, bridges and the recently expanded roads. The developer also explained that all complementary work for the launch of IKEA is close to being completed. The mall has introduced 550 parking bays on the roof level directly connecting the parking lots to the cinemas, the food court, and the family entertainment centre on the second level, as well as an additional 500 parking bays to the lower ground level.

“With innovation, design and value behind every component mapped out, we can affirm that we are positioned to take on large-scale projects to meet the demands and serve the community. As we are nearing the launch date of IKEA Oman, the road infrastructural works are progressing towards completion. By adding IKEA to its retail portfolio, Oman Avenues Mall will further enhance its offerings whilst simultaneously creating an inviting atmosphere,” said Eng Saud Mohammed Al Khalili, Development Director, Al Taher Group.

Harnessing technology and digitalisation, the mall developers have fitted smart navigation stands, interactive digital screens, wall projectors to assist in room planning and product selection and much more, Khalili said. Shoppers will be assisted by digital signage and in-store technology to locate the most suitable furniture, visualise room layouts and schedule deliveries in the shortest time.

Intent on delivering a smarter and more personalised shopping experience, the mall has focused on digitising customer service as well as elevating innovation and sustainability, he commented.

The new Ikea store will have over 9,000 articles covering living room, bedroom, kitchen, bathroom and other home décor selections. Furthermore, products will also be available virtually through a comprehensive, user-friendly website. The premises also include a 400-seat restaurant.

“We are ecstatic to be hosting the country’s very first IKEA megastore at Oman Avenues Mall. After analysing people’s demands, we realised the gap in the market and worked on delivering the best solution to future-proof the mall by hosting a globally renowned brand like IKEA. The trust retailers have in us is a testimony of our dedication and perseverance to continue offering our services,” said Ashraf Ali M A, Executive Director of Lulu Group International, which manages the mall.

In June, 2022, Oman’s Khimji Ramdas Group said it will support the construction of a new vocational centre for AEIC and, in the same month, it was announced that Oman’s 1,800m long zipline could be operational by Q4, 2022.
